Old Pirate Radio Ship to Become New Club.
by Techno TV - May 8, 2018
Originally housing the Netherlands-based pirate radio station 'Radio Veronica' during the 1960s and 1970s, the ship used for independent broadcasting has been transformed into Amsterdam's latest club. Docked in NDSM wharf, noorderschip, the vessel had a tumultuous history, including a grounding in 1973 after losing its anchor during a storm, leading to the shutdown of the illegal radio stream by the Dutch government. Subsequently, it served as a traveling discotheque in various locations worldwide.
The revamped ship now boasts a terrace, restaurant, daytime event space, Funktion One sound system, and an underwater dancefloor integrated into the boat's hull. Although specific events have not been announced yet, creative director David Cornelissen aims to provide a platform for local initiatives and collectives in Amsterdam. With a length of 50 meters and a total capacity of 300, Cornelissen emphasizes the importance of offering a venue for smaller initiatives without the pressure of filling a large space.
