The UK government is set to introduce a new law aimed at safeguarding music venues from property developers.

by Techno TV - January 22, 2018

The grassroots music scene in the UK received a significant boost as the government endorsed plans to legally establish the "Agent of Change" principle, protecting venues from developers. Housing Secretary Sajid Javid, following discussions led by UK Music, has pledged substantial modifications to national planning policies.

Javid emphasized the crucial role music venues play in communities, uniting people, contributing to the local economy, and nurturing the country's grassroots music culture. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the current situation where long-standing venues bear the responsibility of addressing noise issues caused by nearby property developments.

This development follows London Mayor Sadiq Khan's announcement, requiring property developers to outline soundproofing measures in their plans, a move aimed at preserving the city's club culture. London, in this regard, stands out as a city that prioritizes its club scene and recognizes its economic potential. Many believe other governments should take inspiration from this approach to protect their own cultural heritage and revenue streams.
